A couple of days ago, I shared a quote on my Doctor. Fibro page having said that , "People with fibromyalgia are not just sensitive to discomfort; they also find intense noises, strong odors, and bright lights aversive." 265 of you liked it and 292 of you shared it with your friends and family! WOW!
The approval for that post persuaded me to write something to provide some additional information on this topic.
Muhammad Yunus of the College of Illinois College of Medicine spotted that fibromyalgia and other diseases have something in common - Central Sensitization (CS). Central Sensitization refers to an bizarre and heightened sensitivity to agony that occurs across the central nervous system. Even more than this , according to a FMS study published back in February by the Journal of Agony, "The more delicate you are to pressure felt on your body, the more likely you're also susceptible to other stuff like sound."
As Yunus explains further, one huge benefit to being able to give a name to this is that we will finally lift fibromyalgia out of the dualistic, "in the body" or "in the head" mess because CS represents a FUNCTIONAL pathology.
It's NOT all in your head!!
When I say a functional pathology, I mean that your nervous system when combined with CS, is functioning in a way that leads you to suffer. You can actually experience so much pain that you're disabled. This is a difficulty that shows TRUE Pain Sensitiveness and it's not an emotional problem. We are able to be assured in this due to a NEW physical measure of the degree of agony which is occurring which does NOT depend on a verbal report from the patient. When using this measure, it becomes extraordinarily apparent the sensitization to agony (CS) is more common in a few people more than in others.
These factors help doctors better understand fibromyalgia and other invisible sicknesses and truthfully, most doctors need a wake-up call! Fibromyalgia is real and you are not making up your discomfort or your pain sensitivities!
