Boxing Gear You Might Need

By Rod Bourgoine

While boxing might seem like a couple of guys just standing and hitting each other, it is truly a demanding sport that requires a great deal of work and training. Boxing can be a great way to stay in shape, but in order to be successful, it is important to consider the following items.

Bags are an important part of boxing, and in order to really improve your skills, you need to consider purchasing two or three different bags. The large heavy bags are used to improve your ability to throw punches using power from your entire body, rather than just using your arm strength. The heavy bag simulates an opponent, so working out with this piece of equipment improves your overall power.

You also will need to install a speed bag in your gym. Speed bags help you develop a consistent rhythm, develop solid hand-eye coordination and even help you learn how to shift weight during a fight. There are small and large speed bags available. Larger bags are harder to hit but will increase the strength in your upper body, so consider purchasing two sizes of speed bags. A floor-to-ceiling bag can be a fun and useful addition. These are, as the name suggests, attached to both the floor and ceiling with a strong cord made of elastic. When you hit the bag, it will bounce back unpredictably, just a like an actual fighter might, so with this bag, you learn how to quickly respond to the movement of an opponent.

Boxers must have proper handwraps and boxing gloves in order to protect the bones and joints in their hands. You can try a few different types of handwraps and then select the ones that feel the most comfortable to you. When selecting gloves, beginners often start with lighter weights, and 16-ounce gloves are pretty standard. Pro boxers usually slightly heavier gloves, but lighter ones are great for the beginner. When you do step into the ring against an actual person, you also need to purchase some headgear as well as a mouthpiece.

A jump rope is another great tool for anyone who wants to improve their cardiovascular strength, but it has an added advantage of helping boxers improve their important footwork skills. If you are going to be working out in a gym and not at home, you also might consider purchasing some boxing sneakers or boxing shoes. They provide good ankle support and are light, and this allows for quick, efficient movement.

You certainly can purchase all of the equipment and train at home, but it can be more fun to join a gym and work out around other people. Choose a local San Diego boxing gym that offers several classes each day so you can find a class that fits your schedule. Don't forget to think about going to a San Diego mixed martial arts gym, as these often offer excellent boxing instruction and you can even take conditioning, Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai classes if you want all for one monthly fee.
