Do Natural Remedies Eliminate Hives?

By Scott Mogul

Do natural remedies for hives actually work? At times they do, and natural treatments are often safer than medicines occasionally used to treat hives, also. The usefulness of natural cures varies depending on which solution you choose and on the cause of your hives.

Hives are itchy red bumps that appear on the skin, sometimes on account of an allergic reaction. Occasionally the reason behind hives is unknown, however. Hives can go on for hours or maybe days. In addition to itching, hives may be tender or bring about a burning or stinging sensation. While typically not harmful, hives can be extremely uncomfortable. Individuals with hives want some relief at the earliest opportunity.

A Natural Remedy for Hives

Some natural cures that might help with hives include the following:

- Identify and avoid the root of your hives. Hives often vanish without treatment inside 24 hours if the cause is removed. Common causes of hives include certain foods (particularly milk, eggs, strawberries, tomatoes, chocolate, shellfish, and nuts), certain medicines, certain soaps or washing detergents, and exposure to other chemicals in your environment. A doctor or allergist will help you decide the cause of your hives if you are not sure what's causing them.
- Scratching hives can make them worse and it could also lead to infection if you break the skin, so don't scratch even though it itches. To prevent scratching, wrap the concerned area loosely in gauze and/or wear gloves, if necessary.
- Take a warm bath with baking soda or oatmeal added to the water.
- Soak a clean cloth in cold milk, then apply as a compress to the concerned area for 15 minutes. Repeat as necessary.
- High doses of vitamin C may reduce histamine levels, which reduces hives and other indications of allergic responses. While high amounts of vitamin C are safe for most of us, it's wise to speak with your physician before taking large amounts of any vitamins just to be certain there are no medically-based reasons it wouldn't be safe or healthy for you to do so.

When to Consult a Doctor

If your hives don't improve with natural cures, or if your condition gets worse, see a medical expert. If you have problems breathing or experience bloating in your mouth or throat, go to the closest trauma room or call 911; often hives are a symptom of an unsafe allergic response that may be fatal if you do not get quick treatment.
